Description
Sardonyx is banded chalcedony: layers of sard, which is brownish red, alternating with layers of white onyx. Those flat parallel bands are why the Romans carved it obsessively. Cut a cameo into banded stone and the figure comes out one color against a background of another, which no single colored stone can do. Imperial signet rings were largely sardonyx.
Because it sealed documents, it picked up an association with a person's word. Sardonyx is the stone of the promise you keep, which is a rarer correspondence than it sounds and the reason to choose it over a general courage stone.
