Description
Tiger's eye is blue underneath. Quartz and crocidolite, a fibrous blue amphibole, grow together across a fracture that keeps splitting and sealing, and that is what lines the fibers up. A study at Penn State overturned the older textbook account in 2003 and this is the explanation that replaced it. Iron oxidizing during the process turns the whole thing gold, and where that did not happen you get hawk's eye, still blue, out of the same South African deposits.
