Description
Green chalcedony flecked with red iron oxide. Its Greek name is heliotrope, sun turner, from a belief that the stone would turn the reflection of the sun red in a bowl of water. The bloodstone name arrived later with a Christian legend about the crucifixion, and the two have coexisted for centuries without either one winning.
It was the soldier's stone across the classical Mediterranean, and Pliny records it being carried by people who wanted to be believed. That pairing of physical nerve with credibility is unusual, and it is still how the stone gets worked.
At 6mm the flecking reads properly. Bloodstone in a smaller bead mostly looks dark green, and the red is the point of the stone.
