Copper is the oldest metal people worked. The oldest known metal object anywhere is a copper pendant from northern Iraq dated to around 8700 BC, several thousand years before anyone smelted anything, because copper occurs in usable lumps that can simply be hammered into shape.
Its name runs straight back to Cyprus, where the Romans mined it and called it cyprium, metal of Cyprus. Cyprus is also the island Aphrodite came ashore on, which is where the Venus association in every correspondence table comes from and is a better derivation than most of them get.

Uncoated solid copper, so it darkens with wear and can leave a green mark on skin. That is copper reacting with sweat and air and it washes off. A dry cloth dabbed in vinegar takes the patina back off the metal when you want the shine again.
