Description
Rough moldavite left as it came out of the ground, in a gold vermeil setting. Both halves of that are worth explaining.
Vermeil is a legal term in the United States, not a marketing one. To be sold as vermeil a piece has to be sterling silver underneath and carry at least two and a half microns of gold at ten karat or better. This setting is 2.5 microns of 18k over 92.5 sterling, which is the specification rather than a gesture at it. Gold plate can be a tenth of that thickness over base metal and is not the same object.
The moldavite is a tektite: sediment melted by the Ries impact in Germany about 14.7 million years ago, thrown east, and cooled falling over Bohemia. Left rough, you can see the etched surface and the trapped bubbles, which are two of the things that separate a real piece from a very good fake.
How to Wear It
- Gold vermeil wears well but it is still a surface. Take it off for swimming and for anything with chemicals in it.
- Wear moldavite in short stretches at first. That is the standard advice from people who work with it.
- Keep the certificate with the piece.
