Description
Goldstone is glass, and the glitter in it is real copper. Molten glass is loaded with copper oxide and cooled under carefully starved oxygen so the copper drops out of solution as microscopic crystals suspended through the whole body. It is one of the harder things to make in a glasshouse, which is why the recipe was a secret for a long time.
The story you will read everywhere is that Italian monks discovered it by accident doing alchemy. It is a good story and there is no evidence for it. What is documented is Venetian: the Miotti family held a privilege on aventurine glass in the seventeenth century, and the technique stayed in Venice.
Which suits the piece. Goldstone gets worked for ambition, drive and the confidence to want something out loud, and it is the product of somebody bloody minded enough to keep trying a difficult thing until it came out.
