Description
The band of light that slides across a tiger's eye bead has a name: chatoyancy, from the French for cat's eye. It comes from how the stone grows: quartz and crocidolite, a fibrous blue mineral, form together across a fracture that keeps splitting and sealing, which is what lines the fibers up. Iron oxidizing during that process is what turns it gold. Most of it comes out of South Africa.

It has been a courage stone for a very long time, and the association has stayed remarkably stable across cultures that had no contact with each other.

The particular flavor of courage is worth naming. Tiger's eye is not for the brave moment, it is for the long push: finishing things, following through, and talking to people who have authority over you.

How to Wear It

  • Wear it for the meeting, the deadline, the stretch you have to grind through.
  • Turn your wrist in the light before you walk in. The flash is a decent reset.
  • Pair it with something calming if it makes you restless. It does for some people.

Wear It With
See tumbled gold tiger’s eye, the tiger’s eye generator and the Tiger Eye rune set.

Round 4mm beads on a stretch cord, sized to fit most adult wrists. The 4mm is the slim one: it sits close, slides under a cuff, and stacks three or four deep without getting loud. Natural stone, so the color and marking run differently through every bead.
