Obsidian is volcanic glass. Lava that cooled too fast to organize itself into crystal, which is why it breaks into an edge sharp enough that surgeons have used it. That origin is the whole personality of the stone. It is fast, it is honest, and it does not soften anything on the way out.

Cultures across the world polished obsidian into mirrors long before they polished anything else, and the tradition of scrying in a black mirror comes straight from that. It is a stone of protection, but the protection works by showing you what is actually there rather than by putting up a wall. People come to obsidian when they are ready to stop explaining a situation to themselves.

Ways to Use It

Place it near an entryway or at the edge of your desk as a boundary marker. Use it in cord-cutting work, where the point does the pointing and you do the deciding. Hold it during shadow work when you need to stay in your body rather than float off. If your practice includes scrying, the polished face takes low candlelight beautifully.

Approximately 3 to 4 inches. Natural volcanic glass, so expect variation in sheen and the occasional conchoidal chip along an edge. Handle the tip with care and keep it off hard floors. Obsidian is a direct stone. If you are new to it, start with short sessions.
