Description
Tree agate and moss agate are close relatives and the trade uses both names loosely. Both are chalcedony carrying green silicate inclusions, chlorite and green amphibole among them, in branching clouds through the stone. The difference is the background: moss agate is translucent, so the green appears to float, while tree agate has an opaque white body that makes the green read as branches on snow. Neither contains any plant matter at all, and neither is the black manganese dendrite people usually name, which belongs to a different stone.
It is called the gardener's stone, and that is not sentimental. It has been buried in fields and orchards across Europe for centuries as an agricultural charm.
