Rough moldavite set with a Herkimer diamond, which is a pairing of two stones that both have misleading names.
Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds. They are doubly terminated quartz crystals from Herkimer County in New York, which means they grew points at both ends because they formed floating in pockets of dolostone rather than attached to a wall. That took roughly half a billion years and it is why they come out of the rock already faceted, clear, and needing no cutting at all.
Moldavite is not a meteorite. It is impact glass: earth sediment melted by the Ries strike in Germany 14.7 million years ago and thrown into Bohemia. Practitioners pair the two deliberately, because moldavite has a reputation for being a great deal at once and quartz is the standard thing reached for to steady something down.
