Description
Howlite is a borate mineral found by Henry How in a Nova Scotia gypsum quarry in 1868 and named for him. White with gray veining, soft, and porous enough to take dye all the way through. That is why so much fake turquoise used to be dyed howlite, though the Nova Scotia deposits are largely worked out now and dyed magnesite has taken over that job. An honest counter tells you which one you are holding.
Undyed, it is the stone for a head that will not stop. Not sadness, not fear, just the loop that runs at two in the morning about something you said in 2011.
The traditional use is nighttime. Under a pillow, on a nightstand, or worn to bed by people who do not mind sleeping in jewelry.
How to Wear It
- Wear it to bed or keep it on the nightstand. This is a night stone.
- Hold a bead and count the veining when the loop starts.
- Keep it out of long soaks. Howlite is porous and soft.
