Description
A two inch chandelier setting hung with green tourmaline, peridot and iolite. Three green and violet stones that read as one piece from across a room and as three separate things up close.
Green tourmaline is verdelite, and like all tourmaline it builds an electrical charge when heated or squeezed. Peridot is gem olivine and one of very few gemstones that occurs in only one color; it also turns up in pallasite meteorites, which makes it one of the handful of gems found off this planet.
Iolite is the interesting one. It is gem cordierite, and it is strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows violet blue down one crystal axis and pale yellow down another. That property is the basis of a long standing suggestion that Norse navigators used it to find the sun through overcast, which is still argued about and still worth knowing when the piece is described as lighting the way.
How to Wear It
- A statement piece at two inches. Wear it on a plain neckline.
- Turn the iolite in the light. The color genuinely changes with the angle.
- Worn for finding a direction rather than for holding one.
