Description
Trinity knots in sterling with peridot set at the centre, an inch and three quarters long. The knot is a triquetra: three interlocking arcs drawn in one unbroken line, which is the whole meaning of it. You cannot get to any part of it without passing through the rest.
It is Insular art, made in the monasteries of Ireland, Scotland and Northumbria between roughly the seventh and ninth centuries, and its best examples are in the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels. It was read as the Trinity there and has been read as maiden, mother and crone since, and as land, sea and sky before that. The shape has outlived every meaning attached to it.
Peridot is gem olivine, one of the very few stones that comes in only one color. It is also found in pallasite meteorites, which makes it one of a handful of gems that turn up off this planet.
How to Wear It
- Follow the knot with your eye when you need to slow down. It was drawn for that.
- Good for anything cyclical: an anniversary, a returning season, a practice you keep.
- Sterling tarnishes. A soft cloth is all it needs.
