The elephant carries luck in more places than it carries anything else. In Hindu practice Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the one you address before starting anything; in Thai and Burmese usage the white elephant is a royal omen; in European and American folk practice the trunk gets pointed up to hold the luck in, which is a much later and much smaller idea but a stubborn one.

The nazar is Anatolian and it does the opposite job: not attracting good but intercepting bad. Carrying both is the ordinary shape of folk practice everywhere, which has never much cared about keeping traditions separate.
