Fish have carried protective work across the whole Mediterranean and North Africa for as long as the hand has. They are painted on doorways in Morocco and Tunisia, worked into Jewish amulets, and hung over cradles. The reasoning that gets given is that a fish cannot be looked at with envy because it lives out of sight, and that its eyes never close.

So this is three protective symbols on one ring, all from the same part of the world and all doing slightly different work: the hand blesses, the eye intercepts, the fish keeps watching.
