The hand is called hamsa in Hebrew and khamsa in Arabic, and both words simply mean five. It is the Hand of Fatima in Islamic use and the Hand of Miriam in Jewish use, and it predates both: the shape turns up in Carthaginian and Phoenician contexts long before either tradition claimed it. Which way it points matters. Fingers up is a warding gesture, fingers down invites in what you want.

Together they cover the two halves of protection anyone actually needs: keep the wrong thing out, and leave the door open for the right one.
