Description
A faceted amethyst teardrop in a sterling setting, an inch long. Faceted rather than tumbled, which changes what the stone does: cut surfaces return light in flashes instead of glowing, so this reads as jewelry first and a working stone second.
Amethyst is quartz colored by iron and natural irradiation. Heat it and it turns yellow, which is where most commercial citrine comes from. Until the Brazilian deposits were found in the nineteenth century it was priced with ruby and emerald, and the crash in price changed nothing about how it is worked.
The name is Greek for not intoxicated, and it was worn as an amulet against drunkenness. The line about drinking from amethyst cups is not supported by any surviving vessel, and Pliny, who records the belief, thought it was nonsense.

- Sun fades amethyst. Do not leave it on a windowsill or a car dashboard.
- Faceted stones show dust. A soft cloth is enough.
