Description
A raw turquoise stone wrapped in copper, sized 8.5. Turquoise and copper belong together for a literal reason: turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminum phosphate, and the copper in the mineral is what makes it blue. Iron moves it green. So a copper wrapped turquoise is the metal on the outside of the stone it is already inside.
It is one of the oldest stones anyone mined. Egyptian workings in the Sinai run back past 3000 BC, Persian material has been traded west for as long as there has been a route to trade it on, and it has been worked continuously across the American Southwest for well over a thousand years.
Turquoise is porous and it changes. Skin oils, soap and cosmetics all get into it and shift the color over years, which is why old pieces go green. Some traditions read that as the stone taking something on for the wearer. Either way it means the ring you have in ten years will not be the ring you bought.
Why Copper
Copper is the third most abundant trace mineral in the human body, and its name runs straight back to Cyprus: the Romans called it cyprium, metal of Cyprus, which is also the island Aphrodite came ashore on. That is where the Venus association comes from, and it is a better reason than most. It is also the second best electrical conductor there is, after silver.
How to Wear It
- Size 8.5. Copper does not resize easily once wrapped.
- Keep it away from lotion, perfume and cleaning products. Turquoise drinks them in.
- Expect the color to move over years. That is the stone, not a defect.

Copper oxidizes. That is the metal behaving normally rather than a fault, and it will react to your own skin chemistry, so the piece darkens at its own pace. If it goes darker than you want, polish it with fine steel wool under running water and reseal with ProtectaClear, or clear nail polish at a pinch. Raw natural turquoise, so every stone is a different shape and color.
