Description
Black tourmaline is what people reach for first when they want protection they do not have to think about, and this is the size for that. Small dark beads, matte, nothing about them announces itself, which is the point on a wrist that goes to work.

The mineral is schorl, the iron rich end of the tourmaline family. It grows in long prisms scored with lengthwise striations, and it is pyroelectric: warm a tourmaline crystal and it builds an electrical charge at its ends. Dutch traders in the 1700s called it the ash puller, because a warm stone would lift ash out of a pipe bowl.

In practice it is worked as an absorber rather than a repeller. Practitioners keep it at doorways, in a bag on a hard day, and on the wrist going somewhere they expect to come home tired from.

How to Wear It

• Put it on before the thing rather than after. The point is to already have it on when the room turns.
• Rinse it under running water now and then and let it dry in the sun.
• Stack it with a stone you are actively working with. Tourmaline is a floor, not a headline.
