The sun is about four hundred times wider than the moon and about four hundred times further away, so the two appear almost exactly the same size in our sky. Nothing causes that. It is why total eclipses look the way they do.

Alchemists called the pair sol and luna and made their union the whole object of the work. Every tradition since has been drawing the same two circles.
