Spanish missionaries called it yerba santa, the holy herb, after watching Indigenous Californian practitioners work with it. It was known to the Chumash, the Paiute and the Pomo long before it was named that, and it is still the herb reached for in mourning ceremony, where the smoke is understood to carry prayers while honoring the person being grieved.

That is what makes it the bundle for an ancestor altar rather than a general clearing. Yerba Santa does not strip a space, it seals one.
