Viking Ship Mug

A mug built as a Viking ship, cast in resin with a removable stainless steel insert inside it. Six and a half inches of it, so it has real presence on a table.

The ships themselves were the whole technology. A longship draws so little water it can be run up a beach or taken far inland up a river, and it is light enough to be carried between waterways. The same shipwrights answered deep water with the knarr, wider and deeper and shorter, and that is the hull that reached Newfoundland. Everything the Norse are remembered for follows from those two shapes.

The resin body is not food safe and not dishwasher or microwave safe, which is exactly why the steel insert is removable. Drink from the insert, hand wash the insert, and wipe the outside with a damp cloth. Treat the resin as sculpture that happens to hold a cup.

Fine for hot drinks. The steel insert takes the heat and the resin holds it, so a coffee stays hot in one of these considerably longer than in a thin china mug.
