Everything you need to read this card is in one detail. The two figures chained at the Devil's feet have chains around their necks that are visibly too wide to hold them. They could lift them off. They are not.
The image is a deliberate inversion of The Lovers: the same two figures, now horned, now bound, under a different authority. Whoever designed the sequence was making a point about how a choice becomes a habit.
It gets pulled for compulsion, for the arrangement you complain about and keep, and for the specific misery of knowing exactly what the problem is. Practitioners do not read it as evil. They read it as a question about what you are getting out of it.
