The Magician has all four suit symbols laid out on the table in front of him: cup, coin, sword and wand. Everything the rest of the deck is made of, already in his possession. One hand points up and the other down, which is the old formula about as above, so below, and the sideways eight above his head is infinity.
The card is not about tricks. It is the one about having the tools and actually using them, which is a narrower and more uncomfortable subject than magic in general.
It gets pulled when the question is capability rather than circumstance. Practitioners read it as focus, will and concentration, and read it reversed as the same things scattered or used badly.
