The Fool is zero, which is not a number so much as a refusal to be one. It is the only card in the Major Arcana that has traditionally been allowed to move around the deck, sometimes first, sometimes last, sometimes outside the sequence entirely, and that restlessness is the card.
In the Rider-Waite image he is mid stride at a cliff edge, looking up rather than down, carrying everything he owns on a stick and a white rose in his other hand. The little dog at his heel is either warning him or coming with him and the picture does not say which.
It gets pulled for beginnings, for the thing you are not qualified for yet, and for the moment before you know enough to be afraid. On keys it is a fair reminder that you leave the house every day without knowing how it goes.
