Description
Smoky quartz gets its color from radiation. Trace aluminum sits in the quartz lattice, natural radioactivity in the surrounding rock knocks electrons loose over geological time, and the damaged sites absorb light in a way that reads brown. Heat it and the color goes. It is the national gem of Scotland, where it is called cairngorm and where it studded the hilts of dress dirks.

People wear it through hard stretches and after them. It is one of the few stones with a genuinely universal reputation for feeling like a floor under you.
