Mentha spicata, steam distilled from the leaf. Its main constituent is carvone rather than menthol, which is why it lacks peppermint's cold bite.

Mint generally is worked for clearing, for money and for keeping a household lively. Spearmint specifically is the mint of clear speech and repair in folk practice, gentler in every sense, and better suited to children's spaces and to blends for rest.

How to Work With It

• Diffuse for a lift that will not keep you awake.
• Anoint a candle for clear communication.
• Use where peppermint would be too strong for the household.
• Blend with lavender for something bright and calm at once.
