Frankincense Oil | Sacred Smoke in a Bottle
Description
Warm, resinous and slightly citrus at the top, drying to something dusty and old. It smells like a building where people have been praying for a long time.
What It Is
Boswellia serrata, steam distilled from resin tapped from the tree's bark. Indian frankincense, a different species from the Boswellia sacra of Oman and Somalia but the same family and the same job.
In the Craft
Burned in Egyptian, Jewish, Christian and Islamic rite alike, and one of the three gifts in the nativity story. It is the standard offering oil: used to consecrate tools, open a working, and mark a space as set apart from ordinary time.
How to Work With It
- Anoint a candle, an altar tool or a threshold before ritual.
- Diffuse at the start of a working to mark the shift.
- Dilute and anoint the third eye before meditation or divination.
- Add a drop to charcoal alongside the resin for a deeper burn.
Blends well with: myrrh, cedarwood, patchouli, sweet orange, lavender
Certified Organic. USDA Certified Organic, which means no GMOs, no synthetic fertilizers, and soil free of prohibited substances. Buying certified organic also supports the biodiversity of the land it was grown on.
Safety. For external use only. Essential oils are highly concentrated: always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact and patch test first. Never take internally. Keep away from children and pets. Ask a qualified practitioner before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition.
Why We Carry It
The oldest ritual material still in common use. Frankincense has been traded for temple use for at least five thousand years, and it still smells like a church.
