Myrrh Oil | Grief, Endings & the Underworld

Warm, bitter and balsamic, with an amber weight to it. Heavier and sadder than frankincense, which is exactly why the two are so often burned together.

What It Is
Commiphora myrrha, steam distilled from resin that bleeds from cuts in the bark. Harvested in Somalia and Ethiopia much as it was three thousand years ago.

In the Craft
Myrrh was an embalming material in Egypt and a funerary offering across the ancient Mediterranean. It is the oil of grief, of endings and of the threshold between worlds, which is why it appears at both the birth and the burial in the Christian story.

How to Work With It

• Anoint a candle for ancestor work or a memorial.
• Dilute and wear during mourning, or on the anniversary of a loss.
• Diffuse with frankincense to hold a room for something serious.
• Anoint a photograph, a letter or an offering at an ancestor altar.

Blends well with: frankincense, cypress, patchouli, cedarwood, clove
