Description

Also sold as Calea zacatechichi, Bitter Grass and the Leaf of God. Mexican Dream Herb is worked with for lucid dreaming, dream recall and divination through sleep. The Chontal of Oaxaca have long used it to seek answers in dreams, and that is still what it is reached for: a question carried deliberately across the threshold into sleep.

Plant Context

A shrub of the dry hills of Mexico and Central America, flowering small and pale. Its name in Spanish means bitter grass, and the taste is not an accident. Plants that resist being eaten tend to end up in the hands of people looking for something other than food.

In the Hand

Whole dried leaf, brittle and pale gray-green, breaking easily between the fingers. The smell is faintly hay-like and the bitterness comes through even in the dust.

Work with it

Place a small amount in a sachet under the pillow, or burn a pinch on charcoal before bed with the question you want carried in. Keep a journal within reach and write on waking, before the details go. It is traditionally worked over several consecutive nights rather than once.
