Description

Cascarilla is powdered eggshell, and it is one of the oldest protective materials there is. It carries a long history in Afro-Caribbean practice, particularly Santeria, and in European folk magic alongside it. The eggshell stands for life, purity and beginning again, which is why it became the substance practitioners reach for when a space needs to be made clean and then held that way.

Plant Context

Not a plant at all, which is worth saying plainly. Cascarilla is a mineral material, ground fine from shell, and the working logic follows from what a shell does: it is the boundary that keeps what is inside intact until it is ready. Ours is crafted and blessed in house by practitioners.

In the Hand

Fine chalky white powder, soft and slightly cool, with no scent to speak of. It marks a line on wood or stone the way blackboard chalk does and brushes away just as easily when the work is finished.

Work with it

Cascarilla is sprinkled across a threshold or around the edge of a room to set a boundary, added to a cleansing bath, or used to anoint candles and tools before ritual. It is also drawn: sigils, circles and protective marks on the floor, a doorframe or the base of a candle. Because it wipes off cleanly, it suits work you want to set up and take down rather than leave standing.
