The gold is doing real work here. Egyptian statues were painted and gilded, not left bare, and gold specifically was the flesh of the gods: incorruptible, never tarnishing, the one material that behaved the way a god was supposed to. A black and gold Bastet is closer to what a household shrine actually looked like than a plain one.
