Description
Amazonite is a green variety of microcline feldspar, and the color comes from trace lead in the crystal structure, which surprises people who assume green means copper. It was named for the Amazon river on the strength of a mistake, since no amazonite deposit has ever been confirmed anywhere in the Amazon basin.
It turns up in Egyptian burials, Tutankhamun's included, cut into beads, inlay and amulets.
