Description
Aquamarine is beryl, the same mineral species as emerald, and the only difference is which trace metal got into the structure: iron makes it blue, chromium makes it green. Nearly all aquamarine on the market has been heated to drive off the yellow component, which is standard practice and has been for over a century.
Sailors carried it. The Romans believed it protected a ship, and the name is simply sea water in Latin, so the association was never subtle.
The working use is speech under pressure and calm in motion. Aquamarine is a throat stone but a fluid one: reached for when you need to keep talking while things move, rather than when you need to say one hard sentence and stop.
