This is the plainest one we carry, and the closest to the original object: a large glass eye with three smaller ones strung beside it. No animal, no hand, nothing else layered on. Just the nazar itself.

The beads are made the same way they have been for generations, in workshops around İzmir on the Turkish coast, where glassmakers work in pairs at wood fired furnaces and lay the rings on one at a time: dark blue, light blue, white, then the black pupil. The blue is not decorative. In the eastern Mediterranean blue eyes were the uncommon ones, and the uncommon gaze was the one people watched out for.

The idea behind it is not a shield. The eye is bait. It is meant to be the brightest thing on you so that an envious look lands there first, and the traditional sign that it worked is that the glass cracks. When one cracks you thank it and hang another.
