Description
Carnelian is chalcedony colored orange to deep red by iron oxide, and gentle heat brings the color forward. Egyptians and Romans both heated it deliberately, so the practice is about as old as the trade itself and it is not a modern shortcut. Carnelian seals turn up from Mesopotamia to the Indus Valley.

The Egyptian association is worth knowing. Carnelian went into amulets, seals and inlay by the thousand, and red was the color of blood, of life, and of the sun coming back every morning. It is one of the stones that turns up most often in the jewelry that survived.

Practitioners work it for drive rather than for calm. It is the stone for the project that has stalled, the body that has gone sluggish, the creative work that has stopped feeling like anything.

How to Wear It

• Wear it on the morning of a day you have been avoiding.
• Good on the working hand while you make things.
