Herkimer Diamond

Description
Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds. They are quartz, and what makes them remarkable is that they are doubly terminated: they grew points at both ends because they formed floating in cavities in dolostone rather than attached to a wall. Nothing had to be cut. They came out of the rock already faceted.

They are found in Herkimer County in New York, and the rock they grew in is around half a billion years old. The clarity is unusual for a natural crystal of that age, and many carry small bubbles of water or hydrocarbon trapped inside them since they formed.

Practitioners work them as attunement stones: paired with another crystal to sharpen what it does, kept on a grid as the point that ties the rest together, and used by people who want quartz with two ends to it rather than one.
