Medusa Statue | Standing, Cold Cast Resin

Eight inches, cold cast, serpent crown, and a gaze that meets yours rather than avoiding it. It is a serious piece of sculpture at this size and it does not read as an ornament.

The version of Medusa most people now hold is Ovid's: a woman assaulted by Neptune in Minerva's temple and punished by the goddess for it. That is one Roman poet's telling, written centuries after the Greek material where she is simply born a Gorgon, and it is the version modern readers have taken up as a story about a woman blamed for what was done to her. Both readings are real. Only one of them is ancient.

What is constant across all of them is the head as a ward. The gorgoneion was put on shields, on temple roofs and over doorways for centuries precisely because nothing gets past a face like that.

5.5 by 4 by 8.13 inches. Cold cast resin, which is resin with stone or metal powder blended into it. It takes fine detail far better than plain resin and has real weight in the hand. Dust it with a dry brush rather than a cloth, which catches on the detail.

How to Use It

She reads as a threshold guardian more naturally than as an altar centre. A hallway, a doorway, the corner of a room facing in. If you are working on boundaries rather than on attraction, she is the piece for it.
