Hawaiian black salt, for protection, warding and banishing work. Under three dollars, which makes it one of the cheapest genuinely useful things in the shop.

What it actually is: sea salt combined with activated charcoal. The black is the charcoal, not lava and not volcanic ash, whatever the name suggests. Worth saying, because it gets sold as ancient and it is not; the traditional Hawaiian ritual salt is alaea, which is red and colored with volcanic clay. Black lava salt is a modern product. That does not make it less effective at what people use it for. It makes the page honest.

Salt and charcoal are also a sensible pairing rather than an arbitrary one. Salt is the oldest boundary material there is, in more traditions than anyone can list, because it preserves and because a line of it is visible. Charcoal absorbs; it is what people put in water filters and in a poultice. One draws the line, the other takes something out.

Use it in a line at a threshold, in the corners of a room, around the base of a candle, in a jar with what you are keeping out, or in a bath when what you want is off you rather than out of a room. It is salt, so keep it off anything metal you care about and away from houseplants.
