Om is a syllable rather than a picture, and the shape is what the sound looks like written in Devanagari. It is called the pranava, the primordial sound, and it is built of three parts, A, U and M, which are said to correspond to waking, dreaming and deep sleep. The fourth part is the silence afterward, and in the Mandukya Upanishad that silence is the one that actually matters.

It opens and closes Vedic recitation, it is used in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain practice, and it is one of the few sacred symbols that is not an image of anything. That is worth knowing if you carry one: you are carrying a sound.
