Palo santo means holy wood. It comes from Bursera graveolens, a tree of the South American dry forest, and its resin sweetens as the fallen wood ages, which is why traditional harvest waits for wood that has died naturally rather than cutting it.

Where white sage strips a space back to nothing, palo santo lifts it. Practitioners reach for it when a room is heavy rather than hostile, and it is the usual choice for opening a session rather than for emergency clearing.
