Mariam jasper is also sold as calligraphy stone, and the second name is the better one. The dark markings running across the pale brown really do look like script, and people have been reading things into them for as long as it has been coming out of the ground in India.

What the markings actually are is fossil. Despite the name it is not a jasper at all, it is a silicified fossil limestone, packed with shell and crinoid debris that the saw cuts through at every angle. Dealers give the source as India, Pakistan or Morocco depending on who you ask, and no published study has pinned down exactly what the creatures were. What is certain is that the writing is real in the only sense that matters: something recorded itself here.
