Description
Selenite is gypsum, and the orange is generally put down to iron and clay caught in it as it grew. It is soft, a 2 on the Mohs scale, so a fingernail marks it, and gypsum is slightly soluble, which means water will etch and dull a piece rather than dissolve it outright. Either way, never cleanse selenite of any color by rinsing it. Smoke, sound or moonlight instead.
