Description

This bundle is two herbs doing two different jobs, which is why they are so often burned in sequence. White sage clears. Sweetgrass invites. Practitioners describe it as opening the windows and then putting something good on the stove, and the order matters, because clearing a space and then leaving it empty is only half the work.

Sweetgrass, also called holy grass, seneca grass, and vanilla grass, is called the sacred hair of Mother Earth in the traditions it comes from. Its scent is soft and sweet, closer to vanilla and fresh hay than to anything sharp, and it is burned for kindness, calm, and drawing in good. The braid itself is meaningful. Three strands, hand-plaited, worked slowly.

Ways to Use It

Light the sage end first and move through the space with intention, working toward an open door or window so what you are clearing has somewhere to go. Then light the sweetgrass and walk the same path back, this time inviting rather than clearing. Some practitioners use the pair to open a circle. It is also a good choice for a new home, after an argument, or at the end of a season you are ready to be done with.

Try It With

Catch the ash in an Abalone Shell, which is the traditional vessel for this, and move the smoke with a Turkey Feather with Turquoise Bead. The Iron Charcoal Burner with Lid is the safer option if you have pets or low ceilings. More in our herb bundle collection.

Our white sage comes from a family farm in California that grows it rather than wildcrafts it. That matters more than people realize: white sage is not an endangered species, but wild populations have been hit hard, roughly half of them lost to development and the rest under real poaching pressure, with seizures running to hundreds of pounds at a time. Cultivated sage takes none of that. If a shop cannot tell you where theirs comes from, that is worth noticing.

Good to Know

4 inch bundle. Fresh California white sage with hand-braided sweetgrass, grown on our supplier's farm with no pesticides or growth hormones and sun-dried. Natural material, so size, color, and density vary bundle to bundle. Sweetgrass and white sage are sacred plants in living Indigenous traditions, and we ask that you work with them accordingly.

Safety

Burn on a heat-safe surface in a ventilated space. Never leave it unattended, keep it away from children, pets, and anything flammable, and make sure it is fully extinguished before you walk away.
