Description
Shungite comes from a handful of deposits in Karelia, northwest Russia, and nowhere else on earth. The rock is roughly two billion years old and it is a carbon rock, which is a real geological puzzle, because carbon that old predates any life that could obviously have made it. Peter the Great opened a spa at a mineral spring in the same region in 1719, and that is where the modern reputation starts.
Two honest notes. The rare grade sold as elite or noble shungite runs above ninety percent carbon; the ordinary material that gets cut into beads runs somewhere between thirty and fifty. And it does contain fullerenes, the cage shaped carbon molecules whose discovery took a Nobel Prize in 1996, but at parts per million rather than in any quantity, which is a long way from what the marketing implies.
What it is worked for is grounding and clearing. It is the stone people keep at the desk, in the car, and on the wrist through days spent around equipment and other people's moods.
How to Wear It
- Keep it on through the working day rather than saving it for occasions.
- Rinse and dry it weekly. It will mark a light cloth at first and then it settles.
- Pair it with something lighter if it feels heavy. It is a heavy one.
