Description

Anubis reclining, in polymer with an antique patina. Three inches tall and four and a half deep, so he takes up more shelf than the height suggests.

This is the older image of him. Before Anubis appears as a man with a jackal's head, he is simply the jackal: lying flat on top of the tomb, forepaws out, facing the way in. The tomb of Tutankhamun had one of these on a shrine in the doorway to the Treasury, and it had been there in the dark doing that job for three thousand years when Carter found it.

Jackals were the animals people actually saw around cemeteries at the desert edge. The Egyptians made the scavenger into the guardian, which is a remarkably practical piece of theology.

Good to Know

Polymer with an antique patina, 3 inches tall by 1.5 wide by 4.5 deep, about 7 ounces.

Handmade in Egypt, so each one varies a little in paint and finish, and yours will not be identical to the photograph. Packaged in a decorative hieroglyphic box with an information card, which makes it a reasonable gift with no extra wrapping.

Try It With

Myrrh Resin on a charcoal disk, Calendula to honor the dead, and Awakening Osiris. More in ancestors and thresholds.
