The composition is called confronted animals, and the version with a tree between them is one of the oldest there is: Mesopotamian cylinder seals, Sasanian silver, Romanesque capitals, Scandinavian metalwork, usually with the beasts rearing symmetrically on either side of the trunk. What the Assyrian version originally meant is still argued about by the people who study it. What it does visually is not in dispute: two forces held in balance by the thing growing between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWolves are a good pair to put there. They are among the most social land predators in the northern hemisphere and almost everything people fear about them is about the pack rather than the individual. A tree between two wolves reads as something kept safe by being watched from both sides, which is not a bad thing on the cover of the book you keep your practice in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCotton paper is the other thing worth knowing. Wood-pulp paper carries lignin, which turns acidic and yellows and goes brittle, which is why a paperback from 1975 crumbles at the corner. Rag paper has none of it, and sheets from the centuries before wood pulp took over in the 1870s and 80s are still flexible and still pale. If you are writing something down because you want somebody to read it in forty years, the paper is the part that decides whether that happens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRecycled cotton rather than virgin, so the sheets are slightly less uniform than the ones in the Vintage journal.
