Buddha is a sanskrit word that means "the awakened one". Buddha is seen in Hinduism as the 9th incarnation of Vishnu, who decided to go down to earth to purify Hinduism. Buddha taught that every man could deliver himself from the wheel of rebirth with a correct inner attitude. His right hand represents vitarka mudra, or the transmission of Buddha's teaching. His other hand holds the alms bowl, which symbolizes renunciation.
